Autism and Sleep Dysregulation

It's Festival of Sleep Day, and while some of us may be enjoying an extra long nap, others may not be able to celebrate the holiday in the same ways. Did you know research shows that over half of autistic individuals experience some form of sleep dysregulation? If your kiddo is one of them, they're not alone!

Autism and Sleep Dysregulation
More Common Than You May Realize! Sleep Cycles Are Off: Sometimes putting a new meaning to Early Birds and Night Owls, autistic kiddos may find themselves awake at different hours than most. Trouble Visiting Dreamland: Getting to bed is not as easy for everyone, and some autistic kiddos will find themselves lying in bed but being unable to fall asleep. Slumbered Midnight Strolls: Occurring during the deepest level of sleep, autistic kiddos may experience sleepwalking, especially if they are not getting sufficient rest. Bedwetting Past Potty Training: Whether due to deep sleep or brief moments of waking up, a fully potty-trained autistic kiddo can still end up with a bedtime accident. Loud, Disruptive Nights: Occassionally experiencing sleep apnea, autistic kiddos may spend their night snoring, and experiencing obstructive sleep instead of rest. Sources:
